I would also distinguish between the Intellectual Capitol that is:

1) recorded in a reproducible and sharable form(Intellectual Assets in a (1.1) collaborative network environment or (1.2) published),

2) recorded in a non-reproducible/non-sharable form (Intellectual Assets written to a (2.1) local computer drive or in a (2.2) closely-held document or journal),

3) experienced and shared/discussed with a group via spoken word, and

4) experienced and not shared (secrecy).

There is value and potential for positive and negative impact in each of these, and each has its own management methods, tools, and techniques.

I feel that part of the task of Knowledge Managers is to help people within an enterprise and its value chain to know when and how to move information from Type 4, to Type 3, to Type 2, and then to Type 1, and how to maintain each Type.

My concepts on how to support this, especially moving to subtype 1.1, are at my Web site referenced below.
